Media Blasting and Tumbling
Coating Systems Inc. expands its one-stop shop capabilities with surface treatment services designed to enhance both process quality and the metallurgical properties of your parts. Proper surface preparation is critical to achieving superior finishing results and product performance.
We offer tumble finishing and air blasting services to clean, deburr, and improve the surface condition of your components—ensuring a smoother, more consistent finish and improved durability.
Tumble Finishing
Tumble finishing, also known as tumbling or rumbling, is a process used to smooth and polish rough surfaces on relatively small parts. Commonly used in metalworking, this technique serves multiple purposes including burnishing, deburring, cleaning, descaling, rust removal, polishing, brightening, surface hardening, and preparing parts for further finishing. It’s also effective for breaking off die cast runners.
The process involves placing parts inside a horizontal rotating barrel, often combined with abrasive media, water, or lubricants. As the barrel rotates, the material and parts are lifted until gravity causes them to slide or fall, creating a tumbling action. Inside the barrel, rubber vanes may be installed to lift and separate parts during rotation, enhancing the finishing effect.
Air Blasting
Our Pro Finish Surface-Treatment System provides on-site industrial air blasting—also known as bead blasting or sand blasting—for a wide range of applications.
For surface finishing, air blasting can produce a matte or satin effect, reduce glare, remove imperfections, and blend marks for a uniform appearance.
For cleaning, it effectively removes chemical impurities, paint, coatings, sealants, adhesives, carbon deposits, scale, excess brazing, casting materials, flashing burrs, rust, and oxidation.
For surface preparation, air blasting enhances fatigue resistance, improves wear properties, profiles surfaces to create porosity and friction, improves lubrication, and etches surfaces to promote superior bonding and adhesion.
